St John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival

2021 Archdiocese Festival

Congratulations to our participants (Evan Jordanides and Stavros Spanakis - both from Holy Trinity, Canton) to the National Virtual Festival on June 12, 2021. The Festival will be livestreamed. Link:

Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions:

  • Elementary Division (local festival only) for students in grades 4–6
  • Junior Division for students in grades 7–9
  • Senior Division for student in grades 10–12

The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year.

All eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which is the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Fund provides college scholarships to the top speakers. Currently, the top three speakers of each division receive college scholarships of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000 and each Honorable Mention speaker is awarded $500.

With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Savas, we are pleased to announce that the Metropolis Oratorical Festival will be held virtually on Saturday April 3, 2021 (Junior Division) and Saturday April 10, 2021 (Senior Division) (Times to be announced)

We will not hold District Level Festivals this year. Parish finalist(s) will proceed directly to the Metropolis level.

The Metropolis Festival will be held live (not pre-recorded) with all speakers and judges joining from separate locations. Speakers will deliver their speeches while sitting in front of their laptop or desktop computers. Digital Guidelines and rules will be provided to the speakers and Parish Chairpersons prior to the event date.

We are requesting that each Festival Participant and each Parish Oratorical Chairperson submit a registration form online through the Google Document links below. Please note that these forms are different from those found on the Archdiocesan website.

Virtual Festival Guide (Coming soon!)

At this time, we anticipate the order of the events for the day of the Festival to be as follows. We will distribute a final schedule once we know the number of participants in each division.

  • Organization of live feed/orientation sessions for Judges and Participants
  • Prayer Service
  • Festival Presentations Juniors on April 3rd, Seniors on April 10th
  • Break for Judging
  • Awards Presentation

With the blessing of Archbishop Elpidophoros, the National Oratorical Festival committee decided that the Archidiocese level festival scheduled for June 11-13, 2021 will be a virtual festival. The committee will host a multi-date event that will include several opportunities for the speakers to get to know one another, an online prayer service and the Junior and Senior level speaking sessions. His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros will participate in the Festival to hear the children’s speeches and to share remarks at a virtual awards ceremony. The same scholarships that have been provided at in-person festivals will be granted to the speakers. The Festival itself, the speaking program and awards ceremony, will be live streamed so that a broader audience can benefit from hearing the speeches.
